Syriana
This seems like one of those roman-à-clef, based on an old spook’s memoirs.
In a nutshell, it’s really about Saudi Arabia, where the old king is old, and wants to pass the baton to one of his kids.
One of them, let’s call him MBS (Mister Bone Saw), is western educated, and wants to reform his country into a liberal democracy. The other is just an opportunist, and since both some oil companies, the CIA, and State Department all want to keep Iran and Saudi Arabia at war, he gets anointed.
