Enemy of the State

Great action thriller, at least the first half. The ending is pulled out of their asses, but it is a great romp.

The main cast is good, but the bit parts have a lot of talent. Seth Green and Jack Black as the tech whiz dudes, Scott Caan and Jake Busey (two nepo babies, curious) as the muscle, Barry Pepper is the lieutenant. There’s the second in command (the one wearing the suit), plus the big bad middle manager. Will Smith freaking kills it as the high powered lawyer, living it large in a Georgetown mansion. Race only comes into play when dealing with the Guido mobsters. There’s of course a labour union/mob connection, Jimmy Hoffa lives on!

Casting Hackman is a brilliant move, since the square surveillance scene is a truncated simile to The Conversation. They add even more blatant references later on. He’d kill us if he had the chance.
