Inglourious Basterds

Oh my lord, a bit part for Léa Seydoux? Mike Meyers in a non-comedic role, post-The Love Guru? Fucking Eli Roth, man! What kind of crazy casting is this?

“Explain to me UFA” is actual dialogue written by professional screenwriters, ramming that exposition down our throats. The same guy can also write beautiful scenes like the one in the tavern, before degenerating into what Dashiell Hammett said: when you don’t know what to write, have a character come through a door holding a gun.

I love historic fiction, but this is nothing. Just a modern update to Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS, with a big budget.

Keeps all the same Tarantino problematic stuff:

  • weird foot fetishes
  • every single woman will be horribly mistreated, even if they are the lead
  • no story arcs, just vignettes
  • silly gore that removes any gravitas, turning everything into pure shlock.

Tarantino filmed a scene with Maggie Cheung and cut it, “for length”. A goddamn crime!

This is my place for ramblings about sequences of images that exploit the human visual limitation know as persistence of vision.
