Red Sparrow

Just like Salt, it’s incredible the amount of old scripts still floating around being just made acritically. This is neither Mission: Impossible, nor Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy. It completely fails to choose a tone and stick to it.

You can tell this is true, they have smartphones but there’s an exchange of diskettes (!!!), and the CIA spook takes a loaded gun into Heathrow. They speak about the President of Russia, but it’s not Putin, and neither is the 2014 semi-invasion of Ukraine mentioned. It’s clearly a Cold War script with minor tweaks.

Turns out this is based on a 2013 book by a former CIA spook. Par for the course in the delusional musings of overpaid bureaucrats. Putin is still alive and well, with free hand to invade other countries, murder dissidents abroad, and pillage the state.

If the CIA has high-level moles in the state security apparatus, they must be saving them for nuclear winter before sending them a pack of cards and ask them to play a little solitaire.
