They/Them

An important subject matter butchered beyond belief. An abject failure as a film, a lot of money wasted by Blumhouse.

As the name and synopsis imply, this tries to go for the woke bingo and mention every single problem at once: gay conversion “therapy” in religious holiday camps, gender roles, closeted gays in those very camps, transgender people. This is not a TV show, they should pick one for deeper analysis.

So many plot threads are timidly introduced and abandoned, or simply forgotten. This is a soft horror film for the most part, and then introduces explicit sex scenes randomly towards the end, without enough teasing before. Even worse, one of the “students” is a mole. Ah, there’s also a musical number, for some reason. Some Pink song. Friday the 13th was an obvious plot reference, they even got Kevin Bacon and reference Jason by name.
