Jurassic Park
Spielberg defuses Crichton crap by growing the plot tumour into the main plot: is Alan Grant, notorious kid hater, father material? He passes with flying colours, Ellie will put out.
We know Malcolm exudes divorced middle age guy energy, for fuck’s sake, he wears a leather jacket. A true Elon Musk dead ringer, talking about science while knowing very little, obsessed with religion, cavorting with billionaires.
That’s actually unfair, the billionaire here is the owner dude. The shareholders are trying to pull a palace coup and oust the visionary CEO, so they hire some greasy lawyer and bring in Malcolm as the expert witness to tear the place apart.
Alan and Ellie are the defence expert witnesses, bribed with three years of dig financing. Very realistic, the scientists will sell their reputation for very little. The billionaire also brings in his grandchildren, the easily spooked nerd girl, and the starstruck little boy.
For some reason, cloning dinos in an island mere 100 miles off Costa Rica is a secret, this company has incredible OPSEC, beats the CIA at their own game. When everyone gets there and sees actual dinos roaming the land, they flip out. The lawyer can only see the enormous amounts of money they can make, but the rest are spooked. They are afraid of messing with nature, but impressed nonetheless.
The tech guys are different. There’s the Great White Hunter type, he just wants to hunt animals. Samuel L Jackson is the loyal right hand, and Nedry is the evil ambitious computer nerd. Newman, I mean, Nedry built the computer system (networking 8 SGI workstations, woo, is that supposed to be impressive?) but he feels ripped off and wants more money. He is willing to steal some dino blood to competitors after releasing a worm in the system.
This worm fucks up all park systems, and combined with a storm, means all hell breaks loose. Nedry gets eaten by dinos when escaping, the lawyer gets torn apart by the T-Rex, and the good guys have to escape, with the kids too. Malcolm gets immediately knocked down and is up to Alan to save them all.
The bible thumping is kept strictly to a minimum, Malcolm is annoying for personal reasons, not much for philosophical utterings. Nedry has an Oppenheimer photo on the computer, for some reason.
This is my place for ramblings about sequences of images that exploit the human visual limitation know as persistence of vision.
