Moonfall

I thought this was a real film, but it’s just a Independence Day /The Day After Tomorrow ripoff with industrial amounts of product placement, in service of Asylum-level CGI. But then, it’s also Interstellar with precursors.

At least they got Roland Emmerich himself to ruin his own creation, like Ridley Scott. I hope that yacht was worth it selling out.

This is an unintended period piece, since it contains the “What would Elon do?” line. Now NASA’s budget will be cut in half by Emerald Mine Space Karen. To add insult to injury, the crackpot UFOlogist leaks the secret on Twitter, how prescient.

I love how NASA and ESA just launch a mission to the moon literally on the next day. SpaceX gets a shout out too, somebody please adapt Seveneves to the screen.

For some extremely weird reason (Tencent moolah), the deputy NASA administrator has a Chinese supermodel girl as babysitter, and her son is learning Mandarin. Why the actual fuck would this happen? Speaking of languages, why does the protagonist speak with such thick British accent?

The product placement is extremely bizarre. Kaspersky on a “electronics-less” Space Shuttle is “protected” by Kaspersky antivirus. But then they actually go electronics free, using a astrolabe (erroneously talking about “centuries ago, sailors used that”, when the instrument she uses was perfected by a Portuguese aviator in the 1920s), and manually calculating orbits using slide rulers.

This is my place for ramblings about sequences of images that exploit the human visual limitation know as persistence of vision.
