Blue Beetle

This doesn’t start in the best way: ripping off Men in Black II and segways into reggaeton. But it gets much better.

It’s mostly a regular super hero film set in ersatz Miami, aping Spiderman, Batman, but the main plot is about family (not FAMILY), the gender swapped Pretty Woman, some rich white girl saving Jaime from the slums. But she’s actually Brazilian, this is very confusing.

The entire family is just a big Chicano clan. The uncle is a Mexican Doc Brown, but with a penchant for dramatics, conspiracy theories, and being a slacker. The abuela is a generic old lady being cutesy, the parents are the regular working class parents that love their kid above all else. The sister doesn’t want to leave her lower class dwellings, but she is not stereotypical either, her character is a bit underdeveloped.

The School of the Americans and American-backed death squads are mentioned by name, but no Contras or Noriega. It’s Susan Sarandon, I’m guessing she threatened to walk if they cut that shit. Nana was a guerrillera in the past, probably hobnobbing with Che, they say it’s a story for another time but they never really come back to. She should have screamed ¡Hasta la victoria! instead.

There’s a background newscaster saying Bruce Wayne just bought a social network platform. The the uncle outright says Batman is a fascist. Incredible stuff.
