Cloverfield
This The Blair Witch Project with extra budget is pretty nice, but it’s narrated by TJ Miller, you know how is goes. It grates your ears, and he only dies at the end, unlike Lizzie Caplan who doesn’t have time to soar. At least it’s only 70 minutes.
Since this is pre-Syrian Civil War, pre-ISIS, there wasn’t much reference footage of being close to an Abrams main battle tank firing the main gun. It’s very underwhelming.
The amount of product placement is through the roof. Most is well integrated, I guess, but it still feels icky. It’s funnier when it’s for dead brands like Nokia.
The word kaiju is not uttered, but it’s Pacific Rim, with some smaller antlions from Half-Life.
Lizzy Caplan playing “herself” is so incredible. The Superman/Garfield line is just chef’s kiss. TJ Miller is mostly a voice actor, and he is definitively playing himself, at least his shtick.
This is my place for ramblings about sequences of images that exploit the human visual limitation know as persistence of vision.
