War for the Planet of the Apes
State of the art visual effects. Testicle-shrivelling details.
It’s like they rendered individual strands of fur, individual muscles and individual tears. Not happy with it, they go for herds of hundreds of apes too. With close-ups even. Plus explosions, armies, the whole shebang. It is not simply eye candy, it’s an eye steak with a side of eye vegetables.
This is the whole point of this film, all the rest is perfunctory. There’s a plot, with the usual references to Apocalypse Now, a little girl to tag along with the main party to provide the stronger feels, and the comic relief chimp. Good enough to not be noted, but not good enough to override the visual effects.
Makes gritty brown and grey look good.
