The Quick and the Dead
That’s a ginormous cast of supporting roles, and bona fide stars being type cast. The plot is extremely bare bones, leaves much to the imagination.
Sharon Stone could not shake the Basic Instinct allure, even after all those years. A very young DiCaprio hangs out with girls his age for a change. Russell Crowe in his long-haired freaky phase. Keith David is a suave bounty hunter brutally murdered. Lance Henriksen is the boastful carnie, also taken down.
The King of the Hill is Gene Hackman at his most evil, with that god-like speech. He gets cut down to size, and how. Falls for a trick that The Man with No Name couldn’t pull off. The fountain is a clear reference to A Fistful of Dollars.
The town is a demure version of Tortuga.
A lot of familiar faces in the background. The first guy us Jigsaw himself, and the doctor is the shovel dude from Home Alone. Bruce Campbell is credited, but I couldn’t spot him, is that the naked guy in the brothel?
That camera work on the Kid vs his dad goes off the rails, Dutch angles and the Vertigo/Jaws effect, on the same shot. I was fully expecting the camera to twist all the way.
The special effects are tastefully subdued, so they are not as dated as they appear. There’s some Nicotero dude credited, but this is no The Walking Dead, there’s not much practical stuff here.
This is my place for ramblings about sequences of images that exploit the human visual limitation know as persistence of vision.
