The Bond origin story that no one was pining for.
After the deconstruction of Casino Royale, comes the inevitable reconstruction with much better backstory for all the elements.
M. Moneypenny. Q. Shagging women who end up dead.
The villain is finally not pathetic nor laughable, approaching The Dark Knight in insidiousness. It might be a mix of several other villains, but it is the right mix. Played masterfully by Javier Bardem, this goes right to the top Bond villain (not that is a big hurdle to cross).
Courtesy of Roger Deakins there is a clear usage of light and colour that surpasses all previous films in the whole series. Even mere fight scenes on skyscrapers in constructions are put against a neon light backdrop to great effect.
