  • The Hot Box

This is a more plump version of Black Mama White Mama, there’s a boatload of titillation, but there is also some skinny political meat in these bones. It’s not just softcore T&A.

  • Dead Man's Wire

This is a wholesome Falling Down, with added Christianity by the director. This proto-Luigi Mangione needed to listen more to Gil Scott-Heron instead of easy jazz with brother Fred, he was unaware ACAB.

  • American Fiction

I never meta film I didn’t like, as this one. A superior satire that still works both as romantic comedy and its opposite.

  • Primetime

Someone get these predators out of here! Entrapment has never been so profitable. The guy in the crutches is the linchpin of the whole thing, when you hear the taser in the background. It’s a line in the sand.

  • Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

“Woke 1 was crazy” in a meta narrative about Friday the 13th, with Pyramid (or Cube) Head as the killer. A bona fide sex drama too, these are more and more rare. The Ms. Rachel of desire.

  • The Social Reckoning

Now I’ve seen everything, centrists patting themselves on the back for the response to January 6. It’s so laughable, I want to have this kind of mind over matter confidence, the delusion is through the roof, the Sorkin-ness.

  • American Pie: Reunion

This is a legacy sequel to something that doesn’t deserve it, or the bulk of Hollywood’s output these days. They get literally everyone back, mostly in cameos for the most obscure people, light and makeup do miracles these days.

  • American Pie

The one with the pie fleshlight.

  • American Pie: The Wedding

The one where Stifler goes to the gay bar and “rocks”. Then it turns into a low brow Father of the Bride, without Steve Martin. Eugene Levy is very deadpan, but it’s not enough.

  • American Pie 2

The one on the lake beach, with the krazy glue lubricant. Where the big protagonist is confused with an mental patient and gets called the r-word.

  • NAZA

I understand those who say this is very mild on the criticism, but it’s not the point. This is like The Zone of Interest, presented without comment. Seeing random Israelis living their lives in the background is very powerful.

  • Along Came a Spider

This is a neat little thriller that pulls some fast ones, there are three killers, but one of the works alone. You’ll never know how Alex Cross solves this one.

  • EDtv

This is truly a time capsule: from it’s release it went from an exaggerated future satire to reality, but now it’s just quaint and optimistic. It’s still “just” a romcom with a twist. Worth it for many meta elements alone and a great cast.

  • Eyes Wide Shut

Just in case you don’t believe this is truly a sex drama, it starts with the female lead undressing for a party, and ends with the word fuck. But they never do, either of them. Testicle-shrivelling attention to detail everywhere.

  • Bad Boys

My good, this is really badly written. It tries to copy Lethal Weapon and Point Break, but completely fails to live up to those expectations.

  • Red Eye

Evil Ruskies try and fail to kill the Secretary of Defense (now War). A 9/11, foiled by an hyper competent sexual assault survivor. The best film with plain Helvetica on the opening credits.

  • Ice Age

This is indeed a much a tamer version of Tokyo Godfathers, but it’s good enough for a kids movie. I watched the Portuguese version with real voice actors, but would really like to see Dennis Leary as Diego.

  • Daylight

Any semi-thriller turns into an action packed explosion fest when you have Stallone as the lead, it’s a law of nature. He truly cannot act his way out of a paper bag, Rocky is just an outlier. This is not aggressively New Yorker as The Siege for example, its mostly a generic big city film.

  • Superman

Excuse me, in what pocket universe is this in any way a thinly veiled reference into Israel? The fake Netanyahu is a Russian and the phoney Palestinians are Indians! Rafah is already a literal quarry before the soldiers come in, instead of a poor modern city.

  • Orwell: 2+2=5

A big hodgepodge of general world badness, footage from multiple 1984 films, colourised photos, and some AI slop for example only. Doesn’t hold a candle to any Adam Curtis film.

  • Final Destination Bloodlines

Another Rube Goldberg killing machine, you have seen one, you have seen them all. They even brought back Tony Todd one last time, I bet he took half the salary budget. The rest as always is not spent on plot or actors, only in effects and some minor soundtrack hits.

  • Deep Blue Sea

This is a time capsule of that particular early 2000’s action films, mixing up Alien, Jaws, and Men in Black. Nearly everybody dies, but not LL Cool J, so he can rap over the credits.
